Global Knowledge. Global Networks. A Closer Look at our Social Events

Conference to focus on networking with delegates attending from over 40 different countries

The ICSB World Conference is uniquely positioned as one of the most diverse and energizing small business conferences in the world. ICSB delegates will travel to Cincinnati this year from over forty (40) different countries to present innovative work, attend added-value sessions and network with other delegates from around the world. A hallmark of our annual event is the ability of delegates to network and connect with one another through ICSB and build meaningful relationships. Through collaboration, member groups have an opportunity to enrich and expand their contributions to the global business community by working together across a worldwide platform. Over the last 50 years, the ability to develop these personal and professional contacts in other countries and across cultures gives ICSB members an advantage in the global marketplace.

Delegates in Cincinnati this year will include professionals from four primary groups: educators, business practitioners, government policy makers, and researchers and consultants. Combining the theoretical and conceptual skills of the research and university communities with the practical knowledge and real world expertise of business managers and policy makers allows for a higher level of understanding and enjoyment throughout the conference and together at the following social events;

Teaching Case Exchange Workshop: Integrating Cultural, Social and Economic Contexts into Writing Cases

Workshop scheduled for 1:30 – 2:45 pm in Rookwood on Friday June 25

The Teaching Case Exchange Workshop presents a case writing model integrating American and European perspectives. The workshop highlights the key approaches to be taken when writing case studies and how they can be used to maximize the learning experience for students. A unique aspect of this workshop is its focus specifically on the relevance of 'cultural context' in writing and teaching with cases in entrepreneurship. The workshop is designed to assist entrepreneurship educators in producing entrepreneurship case studies using ‘best practice’ techniques and highlight the elements that are required to make case studies as effective and interesting as possible for teaching purposes.

The Teaching Case Exchange Workshop, first presented at the USASBE 2010 Conference in Nashville, TN USA, is a joint initiative of USASBE and ECSB with presenters Thomas M. Cooney, ECSB President, and Jeffrey R. Cornwall, USASBE President. The workshop is an integration of successful models that have already been presented at USASBE conferences and in Europe as part of the RENT (ECSB) Conferences in the past. Please visit our website for a database of cases as well as a video recording of the first presentation at the USASBE 2010 Conference last January.

Entrepreneurship and the Global Recession: Insights from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM)

Panel workshop session scheduled for 10:15 – 11:30 am in Rookwood on Saturday, June 26
Entrepreneurship is broadly viewed as a major contributor to the economic growth of nations. When economic growth stalls we can assume there are more challenges, yet perhaps more opportunities, for entrepreneurship. A major goal of this session will be to extend knowledge about entrepreneurship in diverse and dynamic world environments. The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) is a not-for-profit academic research consortium that has as its goal making high quality international research data on entrepreneurial activity readily available to as wide an audience as possible. GEM is the largest single study of entrepreneurial activity in the world. This session will explore the frequency and nature of entrepreneurship during the 2008-9 global recession. It will start with background on changes in global entrepreneurial activity and aspirations, followed by a discussion of the nature and impact of several Entrepreneurial Framework Conditions during the economic recession. Audience participation will ensue. Presenters include GEM Board Members Donna Kelley (representing Babson College), José Ernesto Amorós (representing Universidad del Desarrollo) and Kristie Seawright, GEM Executive Director. Denny Dennis from the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) will participate as the discussant.

ICSB eForum on Open Innovation

Workshop scheduled for 1:30 - 2:45 in Mayflower 1 on Friday June 25
Innovation has long been recognized as a key driver of entrepreneurship and economic growth. In the 19th and 20th centuries innovations were seen primarily as products and processes to be guarded, lest they be stolen and copied by competitors. Patents and copyrights gave some protection, but sometimes the innovation was seen as so important that its basic nature must be kept secret. This process of “closed innovation” sees maintaining control as a central concern. While this worked well for quite a while, the very nature of how entrepreneurial organizations create new ideas and develop them into marketable products and processes has, in the 21st century, changed. This is because control and secrecy now hinder rather than protect innovation. Individuals and organizations are no longer isolated; we are now connected with the ability to communicate instantly with almost anyone anywhere. This has led to a change in the basic approach to innovation, now labeled “open innovation.”
Open innovation means that firms now not only seek and use outside knowledge, as has always been the case, but, at the same time, make at least some of their internal knowledge and expertise available to outsiders. Moreover, the search for and use of such external innovation is much broader and more extensive than in the past, due to the enhanced interconnectivity provided by the internet. The idea, then, is that firms can not only benefit by reaching out more than ever to obtain and develop in their own ways the innovative ideas they get from others but can also profit by sharing their own innovative ideas, even with competitors. The very boundaries of organizations are becoming more permeable and open

The ICSB eForum on Open innovation will explore the concept of open innovation and examine its current and future developments. Click here to register for the ICSB eForum on Open Innovation workshop.
